Agenda

  1. Welcome, and how a room that builds software together works: How This Class Works and Our Classroom Norms
  2. Warmup: The Robot Café — can another group follow your instructions exactly?
  3. At the boards, no laptops: The Human Interpreter — you are the computer
  4. The founding problem: The Inherited Program — a working program nobody here wrote, and a change request you must make safely. This one is a diagnostic: nothing is collected and nothing is marked. What the room can and cannot do with it today is what decides where Unit 1 starts.
  5. Compare and name it: Reading Somebody Else’s Code
  6. Tour of the site, so nothing here is hidden from you: Using This Site and What This Site Can Do
  7. The year ahead: Learning Goals — where all of this is going
  8. Post your group’s one-sentence answer to “what does it actually do?” — we keep every sentence on the wall all semester

Things to do before our next class

  • Check What to Bring — every class this semester needs a machine that runs Python 3.
  • Try the five-minute Scavenger Hunt to get comfortable finding things across the course.
  • Skim Code Journal; you write your first entry next class.
